Crossing of the Dan

The Crossing of the Dan, now accorded national status by the NSSAR, commemorates the momentous retreat of General Nathanael Greene's American army through the Carolinas during the American Revolution and its narrow escape across the Dan River before British troops under Lord Cornwallis.

A commemoration of the Crossing of the Dan takes place each year on a weekend in February at the Prizery in South Boston, Virginia. This converted tobacco factory, now a community arts center, houses an exhibit interpreting the Southern campaign of the Revolution with the focus on the Crossing. Within walking distance is a riverside memorial at the actual Crossing site.

Beginning on Thursday of the designated weekend the Prizery's Chastain Theatre hosts the 6th Grade Crossing Players, Singers, and Musicians from Halifax Middle School as they present the Crossing story in verse and song for the public. School essay winners are recognized. On Friday, the previous day's performance is repeated for all 6th graders at Halifax Middle School. That evening a Dutch treat Meet and Greet dinner is available at a local restaurant for event participants. On Saturday the annual Crossing program begins at 10 a.m. in the Prizery's Chastain Theatre and includes greetings, presentation of wreaths, and a keynote address by a noted speaker or interpreter related to some aspect of the event.

Afterward, witness a dramatic portrayal of the crossing by American and British reenactors complete with cannon and musketry fire, and a ferry boat replica for the crossing of the Dan River.
